Issue: V5R1 and twinax support

There has been some confusion regarding whether or not IBM plans to discontinue twinax support in V5R1. Twinax support is NOT being discontinued in this release, and IBM has no immediate plans to do so. Furthermore, all iMessaging products are compatible with V5R1. No known problems exist with RMSemail, RMSautomation, RVSvoice, ML400, ML5250 or iVoice™.

However, if you are using RFSfax, you may need to apply the following PTFs from IBM: S102050, S1020009, S101568, and S102059. The other known problem is security-related. If the RFSfax controller is not able to sign onto the AS/400 after the upgrade, ensure that it has *ALLOBJ and *JOBCTL authority.

Vernon Harvey joins iMessaging Management Team
Experience and Technical Innovation Mark His 18-year Career

Vernon Harvey was recently appointed iMessaging's Vice President of Development. Vernon, a seasoned and respected development professional with over 18 years of experience in customer-focused projects, will lead iMessaging's product development activities.

Vernon comes to iMessaging with an extensive background in PC development, with particular orientation towards front-end processors interfaced to IBM midrange computers to enable advanced communications solutions. After extensive study in Computer Information Systems at the College of New Caledonia in Prince George, British Columbia, Vernon joined Rydex Industries and initially worked on several projects involving PCs, the entire range of IBM's System/3X line and, eventually, the AS/400.

While at Rydex, Harvey was the chief architect of the company's first voice response product, which featured an entirely speech-synthesized voice. Subsequently, he produced later versions of this system incorporating digitized speech and Caller ID support. Vernon has been instrumental in the development of a variety of other communications systems involving email and facsimile, which ultimately evolved into RMTi's RMSemail, RMSautomation and RFSfax systems.

Karen Sedlar, President of iMessaging Systems, says, "Vernon's insights, business acumen and creative abilities are a valuable addition to our management team. We expect him to make important contributions toward our short-term goals and future growth."

Exciting new features are scheduled for the June, 2002 release of iVoice™ 2.01.0. This new version will feature the following enhancements:

  • Text-to-Speech (TTS): iVoice™'s TTS quality has been significantly enhanced with a new natural language TTS engine from SpeechWorks. SpeechWorks, our speech technology partner, has developed the Speechify TTS engine using original work completed by AT&T labs.
  • Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR): Improvements in recognition reliability and accuracy strengthen our ASR module from SpeechWorks. We have worked closely with the SpeechWorks team over the past six months to evaluate and incorporate several upgrades to Speechworks ASR services.
  • Operations: iVoice™'s controller operations have been simplified with the addition of a "configurable" option which allows uploading, storage and synchronization of iVoice™ voice files to the iSeries 400, thus eliminating the need for voice file backup and improving the speed in which a new or replacement iVoice™ server can be brought online.
  • Statistical Reporting: iVoice™ now offers a comprehensive "Call Log Report" available on the iSeries 400. Now, call tracking and iVoice™ usage can be monitored easily through any iSeries 400 workstation.
  • Dynamic Redundant Takeover: Another operational improvement to iVoice™, this feature allows a backup (redundant) system to automatically begin answering calls in the event that the primary iVoice™ system fails. Dynamic Redundant Takeover, coupled with iVoice™'s enhanced reliability configurations, further strengthens the stability and reliability of the platform.
  • Conversion Utilities: iVoice offers a set of programming tools to assist in the migration of existing RVSvoice programs to the new iVoice™ API programming model.

As the name implies, ASR is the ability of a machine to recognize human speech. ASR is typically segmented into 'Continuous' and 'Discrete' speech. Continuous speech refers to naturally spoken words, phrases and sentences. Continuous speech means speaking fluidly, without pauses between words. Alternatively, discrete speech refers to an isolated work, spoken as an individual command, such as "balance" to retrieve your account balance from the system.

With speech recognition, a signal-processing module takes digitized speech samples and converts them into a series of patterns. These patterns are then compared to a set of stored models that have been constructed from the knowledge of acoustics, language and dictionaries. Increasingly, sophisticated algorithms, analysis tools and recognition methods are used to improve the recognition accuracy.

If you would like more information regarding ASR or a free copy of our Speech Recognition primer, please send an email to info@iMessagingSystems.com or call us at 866-iMS-LIVE.
